Data Infrastructure Sector

As well as the physical infrastructure that powers the digital sector, there are the businesses and people that enable the digital sector, through the creation of digital infrastructure. Here we present the location of data infrastructure businesses and the estimated regional distribution of their employees.

There is a good correlation between areas that have data centres and areas that have a supporting network of data infrastructure businesses and employees. Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, London are all cities that have a good number of data centres in their proximity.

About this data

The Data Infrastructure sector has been defined using The Data City's RTICs. Specifically, the Data Infrastructure RTIC was used, with one exclusion - the data centre vertical. The full definition of the RTIC and its verticals can be found on The Data City website. The data centre vertical is excluded to avoid presenting data already presented elsewhere on the Local Digital Index.

The number of employees by each Local Authority are estimated, as companies with more than one location do not have to declare the size of their operation at each location. We calculate the estimate by splitting the known number of employees equally across the number of locations for a given company and aggregating by Local Authority.

The absolute count of businesses and employees is presented. We do not account for the differing sizes of business bases by Local Authority. Large cities will have a higher absolute count of employees or businesses.
